SAT Attack: Badger KS3 Maths Test Guides

SAT Attack: Badger KS3 Maths Test Guides

SAT Attack Maths books are designed with attack in mind...“Supplies of Ammunition to help make your Maths Exams Mission Possible”...and perhaps a slight link with a popular film series! They look appealing, and as the cover is opened, the books are clearly arranged in a logical manner with topic notes on the left of the page and questions on the right. Both student books begin with advice and tips for preparing for SATs, and are then divided up in to Number, Algebra, Shape & Space, Statistics, Probability and Ma1 topics.

I used Book 1 first with a group aiming for level 5/6, and found them very clear and accessible for all students. Book 2 is designed in a similar style, with predominantly shorter questions, and I was pleased to see questions ranging up to level 8. These books would be very useful to use for consolidation exercises. Given that they are quite hardy, have notes if students get stuck, and are very good value, they would provide ideal homework books. They could also be used as revision in the lead up to the SATs, but do not include the answers for students to check their work, as these are in the Teacher’s Book.

Initially I was disappointed that the books did not extend into more of the test style questions. However, I was relieved to see in the Teacher’s Book that there are tests, divided in to non-calculator & calculator, and in to levels, to be used in conjunction with the book. There are also diagnostic tests and three mental tests to complete the set. For teachers who are unfamiliar with SATs, the Teacher Book is therefore a very useful resource for deciding which paper students should be entered for.

This series as a whole provides very good value for money and would certainly aid the dreaded SATs preparation for many teachers, particularly NQTs and those who have not been through the SAT experience before. The student books could also be used independently with students throughout the school, providing a clear and “Mission Possible” approach to a plethora of Maths topics.
