Foundation Mathematics for Edexcel GCSE • Foundation Mathematics for OCR GCSE
There are two versions of this book – essentially the same text – only the examination questions are different. The books are black and white with blue shading, but no other use of colour. There are 40 chapters, divided so that the first eleven concern number, then nine for algebra, thirteen for shape, space and measure and finally seven for handling data. Each chapter begins with a short summary, followed by a clear set of examples and exercises. The chapters end with examination questions from the appropriate examination board. At the end of each section there is a section review, again containing appropriate examination questions. At the end of the book there is a practice examination paper, and finally answers for all the exercises, section reviews and practice paper.
These books are not terribly interesting, rather a dependable source of questions – especially examination questions. There are no references to assessment for learning – none of the sections, exercises or examination questions are graded which is a shame.
There are a range of new textbooks available for Foundation GCSE – this does not appear to be the best of them.
