Professional Development
ATM Professional Development Courses provide the opportunity for participants to work collaboratively with other teachers on a range of mathematical activities suitable for the pupils they teach.
The activities will:
- be interactive and promote discussion
- where appropriate, use ICT and practical resources
- be flexible, so that they can be adapted to suit different ages and abilities of pupils
- promote understanding and exploration of significant mathematical ideas
- encourage a problem-solving approach that motivates the acquisition of knowledge and skills
- challenge pupils to think and reason mathematically
By working on the activities participants will be enabled to:
- see how they can be embedded into schemes of work
- embed ‘using and applying mathematics’ in their teaching
- develop their questioning techniques to assess and promote pupils’ learning
We can design a course tailored to your personal or institutional needs - here are just some of the courses we can provide:
- Interactive mathematics teaching
- Teaching through activities not exercises
- Functioning mathematically
- Teaching mathematics without a textbook
- Activities for gifted and talented pupils
- Effective use of interactive whiteboards
- Justification and proof
- Teaching mathematics to mixed ability classes
- Assessment for learning
ATM courses – what participants have said:
“Pace was excellent – fast enough to be challenging but not impossible!”
“Almost every problem posed made me question how I teach and how I can do better to encourage pupils more.”
“Innovative and inspirational”
“Absolutely pure dead brilliant”
“This was my first ATM Day Course, but now I will attend all I can.”
“There were lots of ideas to encourage creative thinking.”
“A thoroughly useful and enjoyable day.”
“It was great hearing people talk about interesting maths lessons that teach syllabus ideas.”

Master Classes
ATM Master Classes and workshops for pupils of any age offer a wide range of challenging yet accessible activities appropriate to the age and experience of the pupils. Most problems are chosen so that the mathematical knowledge and skills will be familiar but will nevertheless require of pupils the ability to explain ideas both systematically and creatively if they are to be solved. Other problems may be chosen to extend pupils’ knowledge and understanding of some difficult mathematical ideas, such as infinity and irrational numbers.
Teachers who attend these events and work on the problems with pupils gain experience which can then be taken back to their own classrooms and can be shared with colleagues.
ATM Master Classes – what pupils have said:
“Difficult but fun”
“It was interesting and at a good pace, so you got just enough explanation without getting bored.”
“It made me think about why something is what it is.”
“It made me think around problems which I don’t need to do with school maths.”

Our most popular Master Classes last for half a day but any length can be arranged.

DfES funded In-School Support for Embedding ICT in KS3/4 Mathematics
The MA and ATM have secured (limited) funding for a pilot in each of the North East, West Midlands, East Midlands and London regions in which support, in the form of in school CPD focused on improving the effective use of ICT within mathematics, is offered at zero cost to the school*.
The funding potentially supports one ‘local’ provider to spend some time in your school helping your department develop its effective use of ICT within Mathematics. The focus, date(s) and length of time of your training are to be agreed between yourself and the local provider, with whom you will liaise directly.
The constraints on the local provider include the limited time they have available for this support – so early contact of the named person is recommended. Also, of course, the ICT skills of these local leaders differ from person to person – please contact them direct to see whether their skills and your needs match!
Should your training needs and the provider’s skills match, the focus, timing and duration of the training will be agreed between yourself and the provider. As a part of the condition of funding teachers will need to:
- Complete and return the In School Support: Evaluation Form* following the training and
- Either before, during or shortly after the training is completed, register for the ‘Self Review Framework’.
- Registration is completed by accessing the SRF, selecting one of the three relevant elements - Learning and Teaching, Curriculum, Professional Development - and completing a minimum of one of the strands during the week, or in the week after the event.
Please contact your local provider by email:
- North-East • Alan Catley
- West Midlands • Sue Johnston-Wilder
- East Midlands • Ruth Tanner
- London • Chris Olley
* Costs of reproducing handouts etc (agreed between the school and the provider) will be born by the school.
