ATM People • Caleb Gattegno
Caleb Gattegno founded ATM in the early 1950s and has been an inspiration for many teachers and mathematics educators. On the 8th April 1988, Caleb accepted an invitation to talk at the ATM conference in Winchester. This was to be his last contribution to ATM before he died from cancer only a few months later. At the time he gave this talk he was in considerable pain yet this did not prevent him from fulfilling this commitment to speak to members of ATM for the last time.
Here I have put some audio clips from this talk. These were recorded on a tape machine from the audience. With one clip (Copernicus) I decided to change, electronically, the order in which something was said. This brought forward the explanation about what Copernicus actually did. I felt this change added to the clarity and also left the clip on a powerful note. The order has not been changed on any of the other clips. All clips are in MP3 format.
