ATM Conference eNews - 23 Mar 2005 ====================================================================== Suddenly people are realising that it's nearly Easter and their thoughts are turning to the ATM Easter Conference. We've been getting enquiries from people concerned that there might not be any places left. Well - I can tell you that there are still some places left for this event which is shaping up to be even better than in previous years. The venue is the magnificent new building Wilson Building at Edgehill College of Higher Education in Lancashire. Thanks to the excellent accommodation faacilities, there are even some en-suite rooms still available if you book soon. Session titles include: Mathematics without any idea where we are going but we will know when we get there! Maths without maths – How to breed an optimal tin of beans Mathematics without passengers Mathematics without...it seeming to be mathematics Maths without...scissors and glue Mathematics without...the three part lesson? Maths without Harmony ..and I haven't even gone down a small fraction of the list. Win a 2Gb iPod -------------- On the main two days, there is the publishers' exhibition and Nelson Thornes are providing, on each day, a 2Gb iPod for winners of the 'Treasure Trail'. Extra-curricular activities --------------------------- The Maths Quiz... Open music session - bring your sound making equipment! Mathematical Indian Dance from Shantha Rao This year's live band is Devil's Fire Extra-extra-curricular activities --------------------------------- If it all becomes too much, there's: * Close by is the city of Liverpool which is rich in the arts. Tate Liverpool, The Walker, FACT, Open Eye Gallery, Bluecoat, World Museum Liverpool. * Martin Mere Nature Reserve. Martin Mere is a marshland reserve run by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. * The nearby Mere Sands Nature Reserve is a home for wildlife at its most natural where visitors can observe the birds in a relaxed environment. * Southport: Eco Visitor Centre. * The Sefton Coast is one of the foremost bird watching areas in Britain. * Red Squirrels. The Red Squirrel Reserve at Formby is home to one of few remaining red squirrel colonies in the U.K. * Forest of Bowland Bowland offers a wide range of unspoilt landscapes and visitor facilities. * Knowsley Safari Park – 30 species of mammal roaming 200 hectares of land, plus a few birds, reptiles and invertebrates. * The West Lancashire Light Railway is a two foot gauge passenger carrying railway located in the village of Hesketh Bank. * Windmill Animal Farm offers visitors the chance to experience the every day running of an actual working farm.
