Conference 2002 - ‘Maths is Special’ - Report
The ATM Easter Conference for 2002, Maths is Special, focused on the mathematics education of pupils with special educational needs. The conference covered a lot of ground, bringing together teachers, advisors, and other educationists from different backgrounds, and with different points of view. A number of sessions were led by members of the National Association for Special Educational Needs, in addition to the wide range from members of the ATM. We were particularly happy to welcome our two Keynote Speakers, John Visser and Olwen El-Naggar, who joined us from NASEN and offered a different perspectives on some aspects of our work as mathematics teachers.
Altogether, there were some seventy-odd sessions to choose from, led by teachers, advisors, consultants, and others with a real interest in mathematics education. Session styles ranged from fairly formal lectures through to very hands-on, activity-based workshops, in which delegates did and discussed mathematics and mathematics education in a whole host of contexts. As usual, each delegate could select from the fifteen or twenty sessions which were run at any one time, so everyone could make sure that their experience at the conference reflected their own interests and concerns. The aim of the conference, as always, was to open new avenues and make new connections. These varied widely for different delegates, but the experiences for all were well worthwhile.
