Numbers Everywhere, Turning the Tables and 15 Starters were important ATM publications and have been used in many classrooms since they were first published in the early 1970s. They are now out of print and have been for some years.

As a teacher and now as a teacher trainer I have used many of the ideas. However, offering the ideas to trainee teachers so that they can make them their own has become ever more problematic, primarily because trainees cannot buy their own copies. This means there are, potentially, several generations of new teachers who may not have had access to the ideas within the books. It is for this reason that we have reworked these publications to create a single publication.

Prior to taking on this task, as many as possible of the original authors were contacted by the ATM office to check that they were prepared for their ideas to be reworked. No objections were raised and one author, Peter Wells, kindly proof-read the first draft. In carrying out this reworking I felt pangs of guilt as I made decisions about what to include and what not to include. I hope the original authors will not take exception to the choices I have made. The most important task has been to bring original ideas from Numbers Everywhere, Turning the Tables and 15 Starters back into the domain of mathematics teaching.

This publication is a ‘best of’!

Within the current climate of mathematics lessons becoming more active, discursive and investigative, these ideas demonstrate just how far ahead of their time the original authors were. This book is a celebration of going back to the future.
